Email FAQ
· How can I eliminate SPAM?
We have incorporated a spamfilter - called "Spam Assassin" into our webmail. Log into your email at http://webmail.osogrande.com and click the spam filter link at the top of the page. The spam assassin paw indicates whether your spam filter is turned on or off. Green is ON and Red is OFF. To activate your spam assassin filter - you will need to toggle if OFF, then back ON. Spam Assassin will not activate until you take this step - by default, it is NOT turned on. Yes. Within the spam filter, you can customize the rules that are used to detect spam. You can also easily setup blacklists and whitelists to block or allow email from specific sources. You can specify where SPAM email goes. You have the ability to place a tag on it like "(Bulk Email)" and have it delivered to your INBOX. You can also setup a special spam folder and have it delivered there so you can review it later. Keep in mind though that if you are saving spam on our email servers - there is a 10 Megabyte limit to disk usage - so you may want to opt for permanently deleting any spam so you don't risk hitting the 10 Meg ceiling. Once you hit the 10 Meg limit, your email will bounce back to the sender informing them that you have exceeded your disk usage quota. You may use virtually any email application available. The most popular email clients are Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, and Netscape Mail. Your email with Oso Grande is POP3. You will also need to enter your username and password to access your email. Note: If you are connecting through another Internet Service Provider other than Oso Grande, you MUST use their Outgoing Mail Server settings - otherwise you will be unable to send mail. Yes - UNM uses a secured connection for incoming mail with either IMAP or POP3. You will need to make sure that you are set to use SSL for your incoming mail server - port 995 for POP3 or port 993 for IMAP. You can either use our 800 number access 1 800-283-2638 ($.10 per minute charge) or use any ISP to connect and get your email using Webmail - http://webmail.osogrande.com - which requires no extra configuration. One of the best preventative measures against viruses is to never let them on your computer in the first place. An excellent way of doing this is by using our Webmail at http://webmail.osogrande.com. By viewing your email as a webpage, your email actually stays on our server and never "touches" your computer - so it cannot possibly infect your computer that way! Of course, you still have the option to download through webmail, but this gives you an extra "shield" against viruses. For a standard dialup account, a secondary email address is $5 per month with a $10 setup fee. Yes, we have a 10 Megabyte email disk quota on our servers. Additional email disk space is available in 10 Megabyte increments. Each 10 Megs is $2.50 additional per month - just let us know what you need. If you exceed your email disk space limit, then any incoming email will be bounced back to the sender informing them that their mail was undeliverable because you have exceeded your disk space quota. You can view your disk usage by logging into http://webmail.osogrande.com - there is a bar graph in the lower left hand corner of the screen that displays a graphical representation of your usage. Click the graph to get the actual numerical values. Note: If this feature isn't working for you, then you probably have not installed Flash. Flash can be downloaded at http://www.macromedia.com/ 1. There is a security setting inside Outlook Express that controls your access to attachments. To disable this security feature - click Tools from the menu bar - click Options - then the Security Tab. There are 2 main ways to customize Spam Assassin. 1) Email List Management. The easiest way to begin blocking email is from within the email itself. Open an email from your Inbox in webmail and look at the header. The last field is the Options field. There is a link you can click on to add the sender or domain to either you whitelist or blacklist. 2) Rules Management. This happens when you either have a large email that cannot be downloaded or some other email that (for whatever reason) is stuck and cannot be downloaded. The way to fix the problem is to login to http://webmail.osogrande.com and delete what you've already downloaded, or dispose of the email causing the problem. Any emails with the 1969 date header actually come in with a missing date header, so this step will dispose of these as spam.
